CAMPUS PROFILE

Flour Bluff Independent School District was established in 1937. The district encompasses a 156 square mile area (100 square miles of water and 56 square miles of land). The Flour Bluff/Padre Island/NAS community enjoys the advantage of being a part of the metropolitan Corpus Christi (est. pop. 320,434) with all its cultural, economic, and educational benefits. Nevertheless, the community is proud to maintain a separate independent school district emphasizing high standards and local control.

Flour Bluff High School operates on a seven period schedule, with an Advisory period. The school year is divided into two semesters with three six-week grading periods per semester. A student may be exempt from a semester exam if attendance and grade guidelines are met. Course offerings include: special education, honor/gifted and talented, advanced placement, career/technology, and distance learning courses. Students may also take dual credit courses for high school credit. Advanced placement exams are also available.

Grading Guidelines: Flour Bluff High School is on a scale of 100. A student’s cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) is figured by averaging each semester’s grades. Advanced Placement, Pre-Advanced Placement, and advanced classes are given an additional 10 points per semester when calculating the GPA. Advanced classes shall refer to those courses designated as Advanced by the board of trustees and listed annually in the district Career Planning Guide. The semester values are then averaged together to calculate the cumulative GPA. Rank is based on the weighted cumulative GPA.

All state-approved courses taken, whether repeated or not, are figured into the GPA. High school courses taken in junior high shall be calculated into the student’s high school GPA. Courses designated as local shall not be entered in the ranking system. Grades from nonaccredited non-public schools, including homeschools, shall not be used in determining class rank, grade point average, or academic average.
