Senior Justin Giles receives David A. Bartling Memorial Fellowship

By June 4, 2020No Comments

Flour Bluff High School announced that graduating senior, Justin Giles, is the recipient of the David A. Bartling Memorial Fellowship. The fellowship is provided to a successful candidate who has an interest in the oceans, inland lakes, rivers and waterways, oceanography, marine transportation, fishing, service in the Navy or Coast Guard, boat building, repair and design or anything else concerning marine life or related to the world’s waters.

Justin was recommended by long-time Flour Bluff High School science teacher, Beth Huckabee. Her recommendation was due to Justin’s increasing interest in Marine Science and his interest in catch and release fishing. Justin’s favorite topics in his science classes were focused on marine biology and ecology of the Coastal Bend area.

The Bartling Memorial Fellowship is for a student who embodies the things Mr. Bartling, of former Flour Bluff High School Aquatic Science teacher, sought most to nurture in his own students: determination, drive, responsibility and an interest in the oceans.

The fellowship comes with a one-time $500 grant that does not necessarily have to be used for education. Justin plans to attend Del Mar College this fall.
